A quick trek using the airstrip at Jomsom

Muktinath is an ancient pilgrimage spot, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists for at least 2000 years. The pilgrims' trail once took a month from the southern plains, where the nearest road was. Today you could reach there in a day.

But the altitude, 12500 feet / 3800 meters, makes that too much gain too fast. Instead, fly to Jomsom 3300 feet / 1000 meters lower and take two days to explore two old and interesting towns before heading up to Muktinath. Some people will like an extra day there; others can climb up as high as they like towards the Thorong La pass, 17,800 feet / 5500 meters

Day 1

Fly Pokhara to Jomsom early. Trek south to Marpha and explore this interesting town, built pueblo-style on a hillside. Overnight.

Day 2

Trek back to Jomsom and continue north to Kagbeni, an ancient fortified town that was key to the salt trade between India and Tibet.

Day 3

Trek up to Muktinath, a pilgrimage spot sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike.

Day 4

Trek up towards the Thorong La pass as high as you like (the pass is 5350 meters) and back to Muktinath.

Day 5

Trek down to Jomsom and overnight .

Day 6

Fly Jomsom - Pokhara
