Manakamana means "heart's desire," and the goddess Manakamana is revered as a wish-fulfilling deity. The temple is an important Hindu pilgrimage site and an interesting visit for anyone.
The temple and small village around it are at the top of a hill, a three to four hour walk once. (Pilgrims were told that they gained extra merit from the effort.) But now a Swiss-made cable car connects the main road to the village. It's a spectacular ride across a raging river and up the terraced hillside for 9000 feet / 2700 meters.
This can be a side trip for anyone driving between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Nearby Bandipur Village makes a wonderful overnight stop halfway between the two cities. In that case consider two nights in Bandipur and visit both Manakamana and Gorkha.
